Unusual tie breaker computations come into play in many baseball tournaments. Some quirky things definitely occurred in the Westside tournament!
Rewarded for Losing?
With the Warriors trailing Wheaton by a score of 2-1 in the seventh inning on Sunday morning, the Warriors could have assured itself of advancing to the next round by not scoring in the final inning and taking the 2-1 loss! The team's record would have then been 1-2 for pool play. With the tie-breaker being the least number of runs allowed, the Warriors would have edged Westside by allowing just 17 runs in the tournament versus 18 for Westside! Instead, the Warriors did it the old-fashioned way and won the game to secure that playoff spot. However, if Wheaton would have come back in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors would have then been eliminated from the tournament--penalized for making a comeback!
Top Performer Gets #2 Seed?
Based upon its performance on the field in the three pool play games at Westside, the Warriors would have secured the #1 seed. The top seed would have meant that the Warriors would not have been required to play and beat the Southside Express team to advance to the semi-finals and to place in the tournament. Rather, we would have received a bye and moved right into the semi-finals. But, because of an earlier forfeit situation, the Oak Lawn Charges squeezed the Warriors out of the #1 seed! As a result of Westside's forfeit to the Chargers due to a minimum play violation, 11 runs were removed from the Chargers' runs allowed total (enough to move them just ahead of the Warriors)--not to mention the loss that was also removed from the Chargers' tournament record.
Hopefully, some of these computations will go the Warriors' way in the remaining two tournament.
