Thanks for a Great Season...
I've coached baseball for several years and every so often a special team comes along--and this team is certainly one of those. Our coaches (Gary Dietz, Dave Lewis, Matt Rafferty and Rich Tannebaum) have contributed a great deal to making this an enjoyable experience for everyone. Ron Drabeck also stepped in to help with the coaching--especially during the past two tourmaments.
With the introduction of Winter workouts and the Sunday League play, this has been one of the longest baseball seasons in OYA history. Yet, I'm disappointed that this season is now over. The only saving grace is that I can squeeze in a vacation before Fall Baseball starts in a few weeks!
I hope that each of our players walked away with some lasting memories of this summer playing baseball with the Warriors.
The players and their families will determine whether the Warriors will continue on into 2009 as a 13U team. Please CLICK HERE for more information about next year's team.
Thanks again for a memorable season...
Glenn Nagel
Warriors Take 4th Place in Home Tournament
Our team opened the tournament against Park Forest on Tuesday with an 18-1 win. Elmhurst defeated the Warriors 14-3 in five innings on Friday evening. The Warriors then beat Richton Park by a score of 11-2 to "place" and to advance to the semi-final games on Sunday.
Elmhurst once again defeated the Warriors in the semi-final game on Sunday morning. The game was called after five innings of play with Elmhurst winning by score of 11-1. The Warriors then lost the consolation game to LaGrange by a score of 10-5 in seven innings.
Elmhurst went on to win the tournament championship by beating New Lenox in the final inning by a score of 3-2!
Next Season...
Any player who is interested in returning to the Warriors for next season should contact me (gnagel60@comcast.net or 708-349-1467). Players who commit to next year's team by August 15th will receive an automatic bye (see information below). Players who cannot commit by August 15th will be eligible to try out for one of the open spots at a later date.
I plan to manage the team if there is enough interest in forming a 13U Warriors team for 2009. Initial discussions indicate that approximately 9 players will return--and a tryout process would be used to fill about 4 remaining spots. As long as the vast majority of players wish to return, I will begin working on forming this team. We should have a much better idea about the future of this team after the August 15th commitment deadline.
If there is enough interest to proceed, a current roster (along with next year's coaching staff) will be announced by August 20th.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.
*************************
OYA entered teams into the Chicagoland Metro League for the first time in 2008. The experience during 2008 has been very positive, so OYA has approved a 13U Warriors team for next season.
The OYA Board asked me if I would coach a Warriors team again--and if my preference was for the 13U or the 12U team. I've enjoyed this year's experience so much that my preference is to coach this group of players through the 2009 season--and hopefully the 2010 season with the 14U Warriors.
Although it seems early to be thinking about 2009, it was important that OYA made the commitment to a 13U team right now. Our team's success has attracted attention and there is no doubt that some of our players will be recruited by full-time travel teams. Many of these teams have tryouts scheduled within the next month or so. There is also some interest from within the team to create a new full-time travel team.
In my opinion, the Warriors schedule provides an appropriate level of competition for most of our players. Certainly, the Warriors have a few players on the team who could benefit from a higher level of competition. But, our team batting average of .270 after 25 games is not extraordinarly high and indicates that the the level of competition is just about right for most of our players. We have a couple of players hitting for a much higher average who may benefit by facing more dominant pitching.
Please keep in mind that the recreational experience within OYA should become more challenging as players move from the Bronco to the Pony level. A high percentage of players stop playing baseball after Bronco. The Pony League is typically made up of a smaller number of players who are more serious about playing baseball.
As you know, the Warriors offer players an opportunity to experience many of the benefits of full-time travel baseball--without some of the drawbacks. Players can supplement their in-house OYA recreational experience with more competitive playing opportunities, including: indoor workouts, Chicagoland Metro League games (about 12), various scrimmages, and five tournaments (another 20-25 games) at a lower cost than the alternatives. The cost for 2008 was $360 ($285 for Metro and $75 for tournaments). If you add in the 22 games that a player will play as part of the Pony recreational league, the total cost will approximate $500 for nearly 60 games!
The most important benefit, however, is the opportunity to play on a team that strives to enjoy the game, learn more about the game of baseball and compete in a way that shows respect for the game and all who participate in it.
It wouldn't be fair to expect a commitment from a player for next season without providing a roster spot for that player in advance. So, just like most of the local full-time travel teams, the Warriors will show loyalty to its existing players. Any player who has played with the Warriors throughout the 2008 season and who wishes to return to the team in 2009 would receive a bye. This bye will entitle a player to return to the team with his 2008 status (e.g. alternate, part-time, full-time) without having to tryout. Alternates and part-time players will also have the opportunity to try to change their status (e.g. move from alternate to full-time) during the tryout.
Others who cannot make the decision whether to return or not would be welcome to tryout for the team later in the Fall. The deadline for determining automatic placements will be announced soon--as set to provide sufficient time for each family to make the best decision for the player.
In the end, the concept of a 13U Warriors team is not something that I wish to try to sell. I love to coach youth baseball, but I have other options available to continue doing that. The feasibility of a 13U Warriors team is a choice that must be made by our players and parents. I've made my choice to coach the team again--provided there is enough interest (i.e., the vast majority of players elect to play with the Warriors again).
I encourage you to call me at 708-349-1467 with any questions. I am interested in your thoughts about a 13U Warriors team.
Thanks
Glenn Nagel

Pizza Party (and Batting Practice)
We will have a brief batting practice session prior to the pizza party. This session will be held from 5:00 pm until 6:15 pm at Doogan Field. The Village would not allow us to reserve this field, but I was told that it is open during this time slot. All players are also invited to this session. Players can then go over to Fox's Pub after the practice.
Thanks to Kim Lewis, Ann Bresingham and Anne Lebert for volunteering to assist with Thursday's activities.

St. Joe's 6, Warriors 2
Sam Marc threw three innings as the Warriors' starting pitcher and Zach Struzik gave the team two quality innings in relief. But, the offense was not able to generate enough runs. The Warriors had just six hits in the contest--Ryan Novak (2), Grant Lewis (2), Mike Rafferty (1) and Sam Marc (1). The Warriors also had a couple of runners thrown out on the basepaths--which was costly in a low scoring game.
The Warriors open up its final tournament (Orland Park) of the 2008 season on Tuesday.

Warriors Bounce Back Against Homer!
The Warriors beat Homer by a score of 7-1. Ryan Novak pitched an absolute gem. He threw a complete game and allowed just one run in six innings of work. Complete games are unheard of for this age group in recent years. Yet, Ryan paced himself and mixed speeds and locations all night. He managed to keep his pitch count in the low 90's. Ryan was awarded a game ball for this incredible accomplishment.
Every Warriors' player made contributions to this effort. Dennis Bresingham was also recognized with a game ball for his defensive contributions in the outfield. Homer left two runners stranded early in the game when Dennis made a nice catch in rightfield to retire the side. Later in the game, he made another catch with one out and fired the ball into the plate--forcing the runner on third base to hold. That run never scored.
Robbie Maxfield made several nice defensive plays at second base. Ronny Drabeck hustled down the line to beat out a routine tapper to the pitcher--which ultimately resulted in two Warriors' runs! Shawn McHale made a nice catch in leftfield. Both Mike Rafferty and Jayson Lenzen did a nice job behind the plate in this one.
Grant Lewis had two doubles and a single. Mike Rafferty had two hits--including a double. Jayson Lenzen also hammered a shot to deep leftfield that rolled all the way to the wall.
Zach Struzik reached base and used his great speed to steal second and third base before scoring on a passed ball.
This was a fun game to be a part of--and it was a thrill to watch such a gutsy pitching performance!

New Lenox Tops Warriors 8-4
New Lenox beat the Warriors by a score of 8-4 in six innings in the second game of the Lockport tournament. The Warriors are now 0-2 in pool play--and even if the team wins its next two games, it is very unlikely that the Warriors will have a chance to advance into Monday's championship game.
Matthias Dietz absorbed quite a few innings in this tournament before he left for vacation. He will not return until deep into the Orland Park Tournament. Two of the other Warriors' pitchers, Grant Lewis and Mike Rafferty, would greatly benefit from some rest before the team heads into its home tournament. As a result, the Warriors plan to use the next two games to give another pitcher or two an opportunity to gain some valuable tournament experience.
Other Notes:
Ronny Drabeck will replace Matthias Dietz on the roster for the remainder of the New Lenox tournament and most of the Orland Park tournament. Matthias Dietz designated himself as a part-time player back in January due to vacation plans made for mid-July.
The Warriors' home (Orland Park) tournament starts on Tuesday, July 22nd. The Warriors will play Park Forest on Centennial #5 at 5:45 pm to open the tournament.

Lockport Dominates the Warriors on Its Home Field
The Warriors failed to take advantage of a strong pitching performance by Matthias Dietz. Matthias threw just over 90 pitches in five innings. He kept the Lockport hitters off balance by varying the speed and location of his pitches. He also paced himself so that he could work through five innings. Matthias is continuing to evolve from a strong thrower into a pitcher.
Ryan Novak pitched an inning of relief for the Warriors. Ryan also did a nice job mixing speeds and locations. He has developed an effective knuckle ball--which he used six or seven times successfully in the inning. With a little more experience (some more innings), Ryan should be able to work his way into the "Big Three"--or should we say the "Big Four"?
Jack Lebert led off the game with a single into leftfield. But, the Warriors would manage just three more hits and one run throughout the rest of the game. Mike Rafferty, Jayson Lenzen and Robbie Maxfield each had hits.
The Warriors look to bounce back against a New Lenox Rebels team that beat the Warriors in tournament play last July. Fortunately, this game will be played under the lights--which should be more pleasant for the players and fans given the excessive heat and humidity.

Merrionnette Park Wins on Walk-Off Homerun
The Warriors allowed just 19 runs in the tournament and played Glen Ellyn on Monday night to determine which team would "place" and advance to the consolation game on Tuesday night. The Warriors defeated Glen Ellyn by a score of 3-0 for its third win of the tournament!
Although it is frustrating to know that we were just three runs allowed from playing for the tournament's championship, the team bounced right back with a win over Glen Ellyn to place in the tournament.
Merrionnette Park defeated the Warriors by a score of 7-6 after a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning. Merrionnette Park played stellar defense throughout the game--converting three double plays in the contest! Danny Poulos was recognized with the game's MVP for his two hits and aggressive baserunning in this game.

Warriors Shutout Glen Ellyn!
This win over Glen Ellyn was a total team effort. The Warriors played solid defense throughout the game--which allowed just three runs of offense to hold up for the win.
Mike Rafferty was recognized with the game's MVP for his three innings of middle relief along with his two hits in the game. Mike used a variety of pitches (mixing both speed and location) to keep the Glen Ellyn hitters off balance.
As a part-time player, Ryan Tannebaum played his final game as a 12U Warrior. Ryan made a nice running catch on a ball hit into shallow centerfield in the middle innings of the game. He contributed to this Warriors' team during the season with outstanding defense in centerfield, excellent baserunning and the ability reach base by being selective at the plate.
Coach Rich Tannebaum also coached his last game with this 12U Warriors team. Rich supported the team in a variety of ways. He coached first base for all of our games. He was always positive with our players and encouraged them to have fun and do their best. And, he supported the team financially by being a sponsor.
The Warriors will face Merrionnette Park on Tuesday night in a game for the third place trophy in this ten team tournament.

Ordering Prints
If you wish to order prints directly through the website, I have integrated the process with MPix (at base cost). The cost of an 8x10 using this method is just $1.99. Here's how to order:
Go to my Zenfolio website (http://gnagel.zenfolio.com/f683425455). Open the photo of interest. Then, click on "Add to Cart" located at the upper right portion of the screen. The photo will then be included in your cart. Follow the process through checkout, but be sure to check the "Cropping" of each photo prior to completing your order. Ensuring that the cropping is correct is critical. If you were to order a 4x6 print of a photo sized at 8x10 on my site, a large segment of the sides would be cut off. So, be sure to review the crops! Call me with any questions.
I have also provided you with another method for ordering. You may download the original file and then order through the vendor of your choice (e.g., Costco, Wal*Mart, Walgreens, etc.). To do this, hover your mouse over the upper left hand portion of the image on my site. You should see an option to "Download Original." You are then free to do whatever you wish with the original file for no charge.
Thanks again for participating in the session. And, do not hesitate to call me with any questions or comments (708-349-1467).

Oak Lawn Tournament
NOTE: With all of the rain, it's possible that the tournament director will contact me about having to reschedule games. Please be sure to check this website before driving to the field. I'll post any information as soon as it becomes available. As of now, everything appears to be on as scheduled.
Ten teams will participate in the Oak Lawn tournament: Oak Lawn Storm, Glen Ellyn, Orland Park Warriors, Evergreen Park, Sheridan Park, Oak Lawn Thunder, Elmhurst, Mt. Greenwood, Frankfort Square and Merrionette Park. These teams are structured into two "pools" with five teams in each pool.
The Warriors will open the Oak Lawn tournament against Sheridan Park on Friday, July 11th. The game will start at 5:45 pm. The team will then face the Oak Lawn Storm on Saturday, July 12th at 9:00 am, followed by a 1:00 pm game against Evergreen Park the same day. Pool play will conclude with a 10:00 am game on Sunday, July 13th against Glen Ellyn. All four of these games will be played at Kolb North--which is located at 99th at Central Avenue in Oak Lawn. As always, players should arrive at the field 45 minutes before game time.
After the four pool games are played, the two teams with the best records from our pool with play each other (on Monday, July 14th at 5:45 pm) to determine which team will move onto the championship game against the winner of the other pool.
The active players for this tournament include: Dietz, Drabeck, McHale, Lebert, Lenzen, Lewis, Marc, Maxfield, Novak, Poulos, Rafferty and Tannebaum. Dennis Bresingham is the first alternate.

14U Warriors Information
The Team
The 14U Warriors will represent the OYA Pony League in games against teams from neighboring communities. Over 100 teams throughout the Chicagoland area have participated in such activities over the past several years. There are approximately 25 teams in the local area at the 14 year old age group. OYA has successfully participated in this league since the 2008 season.
OYA players who are 14 years of age or younger as of April 30, 2011 are eligible. The team offers a couple of "part-time" roster spots to accommodate players who are unable to commit to participating in all of the team's events.
Events
Although the team will be formed in September, most of the team's events will not occur until next year. There may be an occasional optional workout during the Fall. We plan to schedule a number of indoor workouts as well as weekly batting cage sessions during January and February. Weather permitting, the team will start practicing outside in mid-March. Once the OYA Pony League season starts, the team will generally meet weekly for a Saturday or Sunday game--and possibly a weeknight practice or game.
The team also participates in a Memorial Weekend tournament. Once the OYA Pony League playoffs are concluded, the team will practice more frequently in preparation for the July tournaments. The team will participate in five tournaments (including the Memorial Weekend tournament). We make every effort to conclude the season by approximately July 25th to accommodate family vacations.
The Coaches
The team is managed by Glenn Nagel. Coaches for this year's team include Jeff Sismelich, Pat Carroll and Dave Robley. We are always looking for parents to assist with team activities as well.
Cost
The cost for a 14U player is $900 (including the OYA Pony League fee) for the 2011 season. The vast majority of the cost covers the OYA Pony League registration fee, uniforms, indoor practice time, outdoor facility charges & umpires for all home games, and tournament fees. Additionally, we have scheduled development sessions with a professional coach.
Unlike many other local "travel" teams, there are no hidden costs. Players and/or parents will not be expected to participate in any fundraising activities. However, the team will continue to actively seek sponsors.
Goals
As with every team that I have coached, this team will strive to accomplish three things:
- Have fun
- Learn more about baseball
- Practice important life skills--teamwork, sportmanship and playing with our best effort

Cooperstown - Final Update
Additionally, the Warriors were missing some of its most productive players. I was concerned that our scaled back roster would not be competitive enough to make the trip a rewarding enough experience.
In an attempt to salvage the situation, we moved towards adding a few full-time travel players (particularly pitchers). Adding players to the roster allowed us to secure a spot for the August 23rd tournament in Cooperstown.
These moves to make the team more "competitive" became a slippery slope, however. Making the team more competitive also involves limiting playing time or eliminating roster spots for the Warriors' players who were not as "productive" as others. Personally, I realized that I had no interest in managing our Warriors' players through such a process.
As a result, I turned the Cooperstown team over to Coach Scott Trokey. Scott has offered a Cooperstown roster spot to any full-time 12 (or 13) year old player now on the Warriors. The remaining spots will be filled based upon a tryout process. This process offers our players the opportunity play in Cooperstown before it's too late (as Cooperstown does not run any tournament for players over 12U). It also provides them the opportunity to develop their baseball skills, have a lot of fun, and to play on a more competitive team during that tournament. Hopefully, this is a solution that will make everyone happy.
My entire focus remains with our Warriors team. We have three more July tournaments and expect to have a great experience playing all the way through the Orland Park tournament. For those Warriors' players who elect to continue playing through Cooperstown, the Cooperstown team practices will not begin until after the final pitch of our Orland Park tournament. That way, all of us can enjoy these last three weeks as a team without any distractions.
Please call me at 708-349-1467 with any questions or comments.
Thanks,
Glenn Nagel

Happy Fourth of July!
Cooperstown Dreams Park
Ordinarily, teams reserve a spot at Cooperstown at least a year in advance. However, a recent cancellation has provided the Warriors an opportunity to play during the week of August 23rd.
To my surprise, there is a great deal of interest in this opportunity. In fact, we are very close to having the numbers to move forward on this. Since there is so much interest, I would like to hold a brief meeting with all of the parents (whether you are interested in the trip or not) immediately after Saturday morning's game in Hickory Hills.
This meeting will be approximately 10-15 minutes and will cover the following:
- Cost--base and optional costs
- Logistics--transportation, lodging, meals, umpiring, volunteers
- Security--supervision, chaperones
- School--excused absences, homework assignments
- Competition--the tournament itself and setting expectations
- Roster--# of players & coaches, playing time
- Other Q&A
If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to call me at home (708-349-1467).
Warriors Go Undefeated in Pool Play
Grant Lewis was recognized as the game's MVP for pitching four scoreless innings and for his two hits--including a double off the centerfield fence. Ronny Drabeck homered to left and made some outstanding defensive plays at first base in this one. Mike Rafferty closed the game--allowing just one run to score in the top of the seventh inning. Several other Warriors contributed to the offensive production in the game.
